Meghan and Harry moving to Windsor

As they welcome their first child in spring 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be moving to Windsor. Here’s what we know about their plans.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since their wedding in May 2018 – have been living in Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace since their engagement. However, when members of the Royal Family get married or start growing their family, they traditionally move to larger accommodation. Although it was widely anticipated the couple would move to a large apartment in Kensington Palace after they got married, they have instead decided to move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

Frogmore Cottage is a home on the Royal Family’s Windsor Estate, not far from the location of Harry and Meghan’s wedding reception at Frogmore House. Frogmore Cottage had been previously split into multiple units for use by royal staff, so renovation work has been ongoing since the end of 2018 to make the property a family home for the Duke and Duchess. While Harry and Meghan will continue to carry out their professional duties from an office in Kensington Palace, Frogmore Cottage will be exclusively used as their family home.

The move to Frogmore Cottage will offer the couple more privacy than living in London, with a countryside feeling and secluded gardens for their growing family to enjoy. Windsor is also a location close to the hearts of Harry and Meghan, given their wedding in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle and horse and carriage ride through Windsor and Windsor Great Park following their nuptials.

Frogmore Cottage itself is a Grade II listed building located on the grounds of Frogmore House. Queen Charlotte had the cottage built in the early 1800s and it was originally known as Double Garden Cottage. However, the name seems to have changed after Queen Victoria breakfasted at the cottage one morning in 1875, when she noticed a large number of frogs were found on the cottage grounds! Abdul Karim, the servant who became a close friend of Queen Victoria – a fact made popular due to the 2017 film Victoria & Abdul – lived in Frogmore Cottage with his family in the 1880s.

Once the renovation works are complete, it is believed Frogmore Cottage will have at least ten bedrooms, as well as multiple downstairs living spaces, a gym and a yoga studio.
