Family Activities on the River Thames

From an ice cream festival to oversized games on the grass, the River Thames has an impressive range of activities to keep families entertained this summer.

1. Family boat hire

The Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa has an array of boats available to hire for those who want to explore the River Thames. Our electric riverboat is ideal for families who want to spend a morning or afternoon on the famous waterway. The boats come with fixed roofs, so even the weather can’t stop you from having a fabulous time. We’ll also give you a map, all the safety equipment you’ll need and instructions to operate the boat. We’ve got delicious snack boxes you can take out with you too. Summertime adventures on the river await!

2. Family Fun Day – Ice Cream Festival

Royal Windsor Racecourse is found in an idyllic location by the River Thames just seven miles from The Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa. On 13 August 2017, the racecourse is hosting a Family Fun Day. Free activities for children of all ages include pony rides, face-painting and an array of bouncy castles. The fun day is also playing host to an Ice Cream Festival, where all visitors have the chance to create their own flavour of ice cream, sample gourmet ice creams and watch liquid nitrogen ice cream demonstrations.

3. Games on the lawn

The lawn at The Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa is in a perfect spot by the River Thames towpath, overlooking the water. For those who don’t want to travel too far, we’ve got a selection of oversized games on the lawn, ideal for family fun. Choose from Connect Four, Jenga or chess. We also have table tennis and some giant deck chairs to chill out in when you’ve had your fill of fun.

4. Feed the locals

The River Thames is a haven for wildlife, and these local residents tend to be very hungry. We’ve got bags of bird seed for you to take out with you to feed the local ducks, geese and swans at the riverside. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some of our hotel’s resident ducks and geese too.

5. Runnymede Pleasure Grounds

Less than a mile upriver from The Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa is the Runnymede Pleasure Grounds. Walk there along the scenic Thames Path and then let the children run around in the huge green space. There’s a well-equipped playground and during the summer months, there’s also a paddling pool, children’s rides and other amusements. The wide green space is also the perfect spot for a picnic followed by an ice cream from the café.

6. Fierce Ladies and Naughty Knights

Just five miles upriver from The Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa is Windsor Castle, the royal family’s Berkshire residence. Throughout August, the castle is hosting family days called ‘Fierce Ladies and Naughty Knights’. There will be armour handling talks and children will also have the opportunity to try on replica armour. If you want to arrive in Windsor in style, take a French Brothers boat trip from Runnymede to Windsor.

7. Outdoor pool

Guests of The Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa can take advantage of our outdoor pool: it’s the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. Children and adults alike can spend some time swimming and relax in the loungers by the pool. Grab some refreshments from our pool kiosk to – the popsicles by British brand POPS will go down a treat. While the children will enjoy the strawberry and mint or apple and elderflower varieties – made with real fruit – parents can treat themselves to the Classic Champagne or Bellini varieties. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, simply go to our indoor pool instead, which also has a children’s area.
