our hotel near the magna carta memorial
located on the opposite meadows where the great charter was signed in 1215
No doubt King John and his noblemen lamented the absence of a fabulous place to stay so close to where they sealed the Magna Carta in 1215 on the Runnymede meadows… On a less fanciful note, today it’s only a 25-35 minute walk from our hotel and spa to the memorial - the focus of 800th anniversary Magna Carta celebrations in 2015.
Our hotel nestles on the riverbank, close to the spot where King John signed the great charter, before reluctantly handing over power to the people. It’s a scene you can imagine as you sit on our beautiful riverbank terraces and restaurants while tucking into feasts fit for a King. Our bubbling spa would have been the envy of the Romans. And our comfy rooms, with heavenly Hypnos beds, the envy of the Gods.
The runnymede-on-thames is the perfect Magna Carta 800 hotel. Come and stay and immerse yourself in history.
Magna Carta facts
800 years ago: the Magna Carta was signed and sealed by King John on 15 June 1215 on the Runnymede fields.
Reigning in the Kings: the Magna Carta is one of the most influential documents of all time. It limited the powers of the monarch and laid out the ideas of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, to which even the King was subject. So the Runnymede is the birthplace of democracy.
13 copies hand-made: complete with spelling mistakes, 13 copies were despatched throughout the kingdom.
Earliest export: the Magna Carta is Great Britain’s most valuable export to the rest of the world.

It also formed the basis for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 after WW2.
Magna Carta Memorial: built in 1957 by the American Bar Association.
USA soil and Kennedy: following President Kennedy’s assassination in 1965 the Queen donated a symbolic acre of land to the US, adjacent to the Magna Carta Memorial for the Kennedy Memorial.
