Veganuary is a challenge for people to try a vegan diet during January. Since launching in 2014, participation has doubled every year. The reasons for going vegan range from reducing animal suffering to improving human health and helping the environment.

A range of incredible statistics make veganism an attractive option. According to The Vegan Society:

  • If everyone in the world went vegan, 8 million human lives would be saved by 2050.
  • Research by Oxford University found animal farming provides 18% of our calories but takes up 83% of our farmland. The research also stated that ‘avoiding meat and dairy is the single biggest way to reduce your impact on Earth’.
  • If every family in the UK removed meat from just one meal per week, it would have the same impact on the environment as taking 16 million cars off the roads.
  • Humans drink 5.2 billion gallons of water and eat 21 billion pounds of food per day. yet cows drink 45 billion gallons of water and eat 135 billion pounds of food in a day.
  • Meat eaters spend £645 more per year on their food shopping.

Compelling stuff! So why not give Veganuary a go this January? Here’s a taste of all the vegan goodies you’ll find on our menus.

The Lock Bar and Kitchen: vegan menu

You’ll find an array of vegan, vegetarian and vegan alternatives on our vegan and vegetarian menu at The Lock Bar and Kitchen. Our starters include vegan alternatives such as crispy paneer with cauliflower and mango chutney, and warming butternut squash and feta hotcakes. Hearty vegan main dishes include delectable chickpea and mushroom meatballs served in a rich vegetable ragout. The sweet potato and black bean burger – served with guacamole and big chips – is an absolute treat too. Plus for dessert, try our crumble of the day. Delicious!

Vegan Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is an indulgent treat vegans usually can’t get involved in due to the abundance of dairy and foodstuffs made from meat derivatives. This is not a problem at The Runnymede, as each and every dish on our new Vegan Afternoon Tea menu is 100% vegan. Delectable finger sandwiches range from red pepper and hummus to sundried tomatoes and artichoke. Sweet treats include vegan scones, plus cakes and pastries such as blueberry and matcha tea delice, and a tantalising apricot and almond slice.

Vegan Wine and Drinks list

Fancy a tipple? Veganism doesn’t mean you have to be totally virtuous! Our Vegan Wine and Drinks list has a little something for everyone. Treat yourself to some vegan prosecco or vegan wines hailing from South Africa to East Sussex. A range of beers and ciders are all vegan too, but if you’re looking for something with a little wow factor, we also have a selection of vegan cocktails. Try the Tokyo Buck with caramelised apple infused gin, or the Blackberry Daiquiri, with rum, blackberries and lime.
