The runnymede-on-thames are proud supporters of the Magna Carta 800th Anniversary mural project at Bell Weir Lock, in Egham.

Local schools and colleges were asked to design two commemorative murals as part of the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta celebrations. The students were given two themes: ‘The Magna Carta then’ and ‘the Magna Carta now’.

Nur Yasmin Ifran Nurdin, Aliah Anwar, Rebecca Young and Christina Bree all from East Berkshire College had their winning designs painted on the wall of the lock keepers house, by artist Helen Brady from Inspired Spaces. A presentation was held for the students, where the murals were officially unveiled.

The original idea of a mural actually came from David Andrews the resident lock keeper at Bell Weir lock. The murals have transformed the wall of the lock keepers house, and reflect how the Magna Carta has affected law, popular culture and human rights over the past 800 years.
