It was close to the spot where the Runnymede Hotel & Spa now stands on June 15^th 1215
King John agreed to lay his seal on The Great Charter (Magna Carta), and on this site now stands the Magna Carta Memorial. This Charter is arguably the most influential document in world history.

The Charter is a series of written promises between the King and his subjects, vowing that he would govern England and deal with its people according to the customs of Feudal Law. The Charter was an attempt by the Barons to stop a King abusing his power on the people of England.

America later took its principles to heart and formed the American Bar Association in 1878 and a memorial was erected in 1957 close to the Magna Carta Memorial to commemorate this.

Someone once wrote: “If other parts of England lay claim to be the heart of England, then Runnymede is undoubtedly its soul.”
